Our Staff

Gretel Johnson

Gretel Johnson joined CUNY in 2016 to serve as the founding Director of CUNY Tutor Corps.  Gretel has spent the past seventeen years working in and with the NYC Department of education. Gretel received her M.A. in Secondary Mathematics Education from The City University of New York, Brooklyn College, and a BA in Mathematics and Spanish from The University of Rochester.  She is pursuing graduate-level studies in Urban Education at the CUNY Graduate Center.  She is interested in the way students and teachers understand mathematics, and the impact that mathematical experiences have on their lives and career success.

John Berman

Associate Director
John Berman joined the staff of CUNY Tutor Corps in 2019 as Associate Director. Prior to coming to CUNY Tutor Corps, John served as Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at Bronx Community College, Program Manager for Student Success and Retention at John Jay Online, and Academic Advisor at Hunter College School of Social Work. He also worked in NYC government as Education Policy Advisor to the Comptroller and Brooklyn Borough President. John holds an M.A. in Education and an M.A. in History and is also a lover of art, culture, and the outdoors.

Malcolm Skinner

Program Manager
Malcolm Skinner joined CUNY Tutor Corps in 2016 as Program Manager. Malcolm received his M.S in Accounting from Long Island University Brooklyn. Malcolm manages logistics and maintain relationships with various College Now offices across CUNY campuses. Malcolm also supervises the payroll process for all our tutors. He is passionate about education and the providing support for the different ways people learn.

Cassandra Vaughan

Instructional Services Manager
Cassandra Vaughan joined CUNY Tutor Corps in 2017 as an Instructional Services Manager/Classroom Specialist. Cassandra received her B.A. in psychology from Yale University and her M.S. in education from The City College of CUNY. Cassandra is a certified Middle School Math Teacher (Grades 5 – 9) with 12 years of service teaching math at NYCDOE schools. Cassandra supports tutors and host teachers via school visits and professional development and writes the monthly Teacher Tidbits Newsletter for Host Schools.

Habiba Khokar

Instructional Services Manager
Habiba Khokhar is an Instructional Services Manager at Tutor Corps. She works closely to support classrooms and tutors in neighborhoods in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. She has fourteen years of teaching experience ranging from early childhood through post-secondary education. Teaching English language learners, refugees and immigrant populations has given her insight into developing curricula that supports content acquisition and skills to ensure student success inside as well as outside the classroom. She has a graduate degree in neuroscience and is currently pursing doctoral studies in science education.

Jill Yener

Instructional Services Manager
Jill Yener is an Instructional Services Manager on the CUNY Tutor Corps team. Jill received her B.S in economics from Binghamton University, a M.P.A./M.P.H. from Columbia University, and an M.S. in mathematics education from University at Albany. She comes to CUNY with 15 years of teaching experience in public schools. She has taught and tutored mathematics in middle school, high school and community college. Prior to teaching she worked as a business manager, financial/operational auditor and academic program director for Columbia University. Jill loves gardening and hiking, and spends most weekends in upstate NY with her family.

Narendra Ramcharan

Instructional Services Manager
Narendra Ramcharan is an Instructional Services Manager with CUNY Tutor Corps. Narendra attained a B.S. in Mathematics from Fayetteville State University and a M.S.T in Adolescent Education from Pace University. He is an experienced educator with 14 years of experience at both the high school and college levels. Narendra began his professional career as a mathematics teacher. Thereafter, he joined Pace University to coordinate mathematics support across the university and ultimately became the Associate Director of Pace University’s Learning Center until joining CUNY Tutor Corps. In addition to his role with CUNY Tutor Corps, Narendra is an Adjunct Mathematics Professor at Pace University.

Shpresa Ahmeti

Instructional Services Manager
Shpresa Ahmeti is the Professional Development and Career Readiness Manager for CUNY Tutor Corps. Shpresa obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Religion and Cognitive Medicine, with double minors in Biology and Philosophy. She obtained her Master’s degree in Teaching, with a specialization in teaching students with disabilities. Shpresa has 14 years of experience in teaching general education and special education for Grades 5-12. Shpresa is passionate about equity in education. She advocates for “at - risk” students and disability rights in education. Her work in evaluating and testing people with cognitive disabilities, motivated her to pursue a career in special education and science education.

Anthony Parrella

Administrative Coordinator
Anthony Parrella is the Administrative Coordinator. Prior to working with Tutor Corps he served Administrative Coordinator for the ASAP Program at Bronx Community College. He received his Bachelor’s degree from SUNY Buffalo where he majored in Business Administration and worked for the Office of Student Life for three years.

Nicole Wells

Student Recruitment Coordinator
Nicole Wells is the Student Recruitment Coordinator. Nicole holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from New York University. She has years of experience in higher education and nonprofits, where she has worked in recruitment, program management, and teaching English to non-native speakers. Her role with Tutor Corps allows her to build strong relationships with students, faculty, and leadership across all CUNY campuses in order to expand the program’s reach.
